One For All & All For Children

Democrats are holding a “Philosopher’s Camp on Education Reform” with the Honorable Andrew Cuomo, Joe Williams, Executive Director Education Reform Now, Senator Mary Landrieu, Mayor Kevin Johnson, and Russlynn Ali, as guest speakers.

As noted in the Diane Ravitch blog of March 30, 2014, “. . . The meeting is billed as a three-day retreat. . .”You too can attend for only $1,000. If you want to be a VIP, it will cost you $2,500.”

On the other side of the “reform” coin, Republicans have introduced the “APPLE Plan” (Achieving Pupil Preparedness and Launching Excellence), which calls for putting State tests on hold until common core is reviewed; not eliminated, getting teachers involved; they are already involved, funding our schools properly; not equitably, and revamping State education; in what way?

In watching the videos on the Children Before Politics website, it is clear that Republicans have not removed politics from education.

If the only standard that matters is excellence, both parties should be working together to change the language of Federal entitlements and to erase Common Core from Federal and State legislation and policies?

We cannot continue to believe that reforming the current system of education that forces states and LEA’s to comply with policies and procedures that promote and produce failure in order to enhance corporate profits will work.

How the system is implemented is not the issue, the issue is the system itself. It is not problematic, it is punitive.

We must fight to change education so that it actually educates all of our children to become leaders, not politicians, entrepreneurs, not workers, thinkers, not doers.

Constitutionally guaranteeing the right of every child to an excellent education is the first step towards change. Allowing states and LEA’s the freedom to determine how to obtain educational excellence through a child centered, developmentally appropriate, Arts based, experiential education that discovers, develops, and directs the individual gifts and talents of ALL children is the next.

Supporting impassioned teachers who engage and inspire their students to become life long learners will provide the motivation necessary to change the direction of education towards success.

And The Children?

The Bill Moyers interview with Diane Ravitch explains the takeover of public education by the wealthy.

Public Schools for Sale (Click on link)

Ms. Ravitch explains, “Public education is becoming big business as bankers, hedge fund managers and private equity investors are entering what they consider to be an “emerging market.”

She stated, “What surprised me the most, quite frankly, was the lack of any leadership in the democratic party to say no. And as I saw the amount of campaign contributions in state after state going to both parties, I realized that anyone who wants to run for president has to go to Wall Street.”

Ravitch warns, “. . . An attack on public education is an attack on democracy.”

Public schools are an entity.

The children who attend public schools are human beings.

Ms Ravitch continues to explain, “. . .If you’re going to make scores the be all and the end all of education, you don’t want the kids with disabilities. You don’t want the kids who don’t speak English. You don’t want the troublemakers. You don’t want the kids with low scores. You want to keep those kids out. And the charters have gotten very good at finding out how to do that.”

Our children are the victims and the casualties of this war.

Children, who through no fault of their own, are thrown away because they don’t meet the normed standardization of the wealthy whose only goal is to produce “middle class” workers who will be told to spend, spend, spend in order to maintain their “middle class” status while insuring the profits of the wealthy.

And, for those children who are not fortunate enough to be “middle class” the wealthy have made them profitable as well by dumping them into the school to prison pipeline.

Either way, our children, our society, our humanity, never reaches its full potential as the wealthy capture and control the gifts and talents of the children allowed to succeed and the lives of those who are not.

We must fight to change the system, not it’s owners.

“No More Common Core”

Education Department
Proposed Rules
Title I-Improving the Academic Achievement of the Disadvantaged
A Proposed Rule by the Education Department

The Secretary proposes to amend the regulations governing Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, as amended (ESEA) (the “Title I regulations”), to no longer authorize a State, in satisfying ESEA accountability requirements, to define modified academic achievement standards and develop alternate assessments based on those modified academic achievement standards. These proposed amendments would permit, as a transitional measure and for a limited period of time, States that administered alternate assessments based on modified academic achievement standards in the 2012-13 school year to continue to administer alternate assessments based on modified academic achievement standards and include the results in adequate yearly progress (AYP) calculations, subject to limitations on the number of proficient scores that may be counted for AYP purposes. These proposed amendments also would apply to accountability determinations made by eligible States that receive “ESEA flexibility” and have requested a waiver of making AYP determinations.

The comment period for this proposal ends October 7, 2012.

It seems that those states that did not immediately jump on the Race to the Top bandwagon in order to secure funding for their failing LEA’s are being given even more leeway in adhering to federal education requirements.

This is yet another reason for New York State residents to demand that the legislature repeal State law regarding the institution and instruction of Common Core curriculum.

As reported by Diane Ravitch, the Gesell Institute of Human Development Statement on the Common Core Standards Initiative March 18, 2010 states, “The core standards being proposed by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers are off the mark for our youngest learners. . . The proposed standards for Kindergarten through grade 3 are inappropriate and unrealistic. Policy must be set based on hard data and not on unrealistic goals surrounding test scores.”

When leaders in education enact policy that is contrary to our children’s educational health, it is time to elect more knowledgeable leaders.

The Movement Is Gaining Momentum

In her blog post, “Your Are The Leader“, Diane Ravitch outlines the victories of the movement to reform education and stop the corporate agenda from standardizing our children and creating work-a-day widgets out of wonderful human beings.

Communities across America are beginning to realize that the future of our children and America depends on the effective and efficient reform of education from a business model to a child centered model of education that concentrates on the gifts and talents of our children, encouraging them to become the best human beings and the best citizens they can be.

In season three, episode three of The Rifleman, seven escaped prisoners break out of their prison wagon and try to take over the town. Mark asks his father, “Paw, is it possible to lose a town?”

Lucas McCain answers, “The time a town or even a country is really lost is when the people who live in it get careless and stop paying attention to how it’s run.”

McCain tells his son about the value of studying history, “By knowing the mistakes that people made hundreds of years ago we can learn a lesson and profit by not making the same mistakes ourselves.”

Mark replies, “I hope so.”

Fifty years ago, television writers sought to address topical societal issues with role models of integrity and citizenship. Fifty years ago this country was worried about being taken over by communism and we were convinced that capitalism would save us.

Today we have been takeover by capitalism and integrity and citizenship have been replaced by lying, cheating, stealing, and such a lack of citizenship that public school children are not even required to say the Pledge of Allegiance or sing the National Anthem.

America opens her arms to people from around the world while using those arms to squeeze the humanity out of our children by demanding that they forfeit their gifts and talents, forget their passions, and succumb to 21st Century workforce training.

Parents, students, educators, and community members across our great land are saying, “NO MORE!”

Cuomo Must Go!

Whenever any form of Government becomes destructive . . . it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it . . .

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security.
………..The Declaration of Independence………..

Governor Cuomo recently appointed another “inner circle” body to oversee the Department of mis-Education. It is not enough that Cuomo’s Education Commission is rife with those who would stand to profit from the educational failure of our children, now Governor Cuomo has placed our children’s future in the hands of someone who is, “without any experience as a principal or a superintendent, without any direct knowledge of curriculum or school administration . . .” Diane Ravitch

It is not that others who have acquired more knowledge and experience have neglected to offer their expertise. In fact, the governor’s office refused to schedule a meeting with a consortium of concerned parents, educators, principals, college professors, small business owners, and community members whose intent was to provide relevant, researched based solutions to the problems we face in education.

Elected officials are entrusted to serve the people. That cannot happen when those elected ignore the voice of the people and instead listen to the rustle of big business dollars. Actions speak louder than words and Governor Cuomo’s actions state clearly that he is not a man of the people but an agent of “BB”.

If the man has no integrity, the plan has no integrity and neither Democrats or Republicans have shown they have our children’s best interest at heart when it means truly reforming our system of education. In fact, the only interest either has shown is towards increasing the profits of those who would enslave our children to ignorance and feed off of their failure.

Our children deserve our commitment to electing those who would lead us to greatness not into the pockets of “BB”.
