Rights Are Right

On Saturday, March 4, 2017 parents and a host of sympathetic organizations took to the streets of our nation to protest the defunding of education. This communique was sent out by AQE prior to the event:

“Now more than ever we need an investment in our most vulnerable students from early childhood to higher education all across the state. Black, Brown, immigrant, refugee, low-income, LGBTQIA students, English Language Learners, homeless students and students with special needs are all facing a direct threat from our federal government and from Governor Cuomo.”

It seems that any student who is not White and “normal” is vulnerable to receiving a less than excellent education in our nation. We have become a nation of separatists, singling out groups of individuals we feel have been treated unjustly when every child in America is being treated unjustly including the “normal” White ones.

Each of the attributes mentioned in the press release above concentrates on the physical attributes of individuals when we should be fighting for the rights of all children to receive an education that concentrates on the gifts and talents they possess, not the physical aspects that exclude them from the normalization and standardization processes of education that created their exceptions.

To continue to support the dehumanizing system of education that forces us to separate out individuals because of the physical properties they possess and over which they have no control is to continue the racist attitudes of those that believe they are somehow better because they fit into an artificial norm by meeting the standards set by the elite.

Fighting for the “rights” of individual groups of people allows the government to focus their funding streams towards certain groups and away from others, moving the money they supply away from the whole and into the pockets of the “hedgehogs” that serve no one but themselves.

We must fight for the excellent education of all children because of their human properties of sheer existence and in deference to their physical aspects. We must march for the right of all children to believe everyone has a right.
