Education Is About Earning Not Learning

If failure wasn’t supported by the State then how can the Rochester City School District get away with spending billions of dollars on failed modernization projects?

The Democrat & Chronicle recently reported that 1.3 billion dollars is being spent on school modernization with no accountability.

Board president, Van White admits to not knowing what is going on. A board president that is paid to know what is going on.

This is not an isolated incident either in Rochester or New York State. Billions of education dollars are being spent on updating old buildings and constructing new buildings instead of on the actual education of our students.

According to the D&C the district spent 8 million dollars in cost overruns during Phase 1 of the modernization project. Contractors were fined $825,000 for not adhering to “rules regarding the use of minority and women owned businesses.”

Stories like these cycle through the “Big Five” districts as billions of taxpayer dollars are shuffled into the hands of illicit contractors who have repeatedly been cited for inferior work and constant over budget payments.

Where is the oversight, it exists everywhere.

Local, state, and federal governments, are all overlooking the waste of education dollars that line the pockets of the “hedgehogs” that control the system.

Air conditioned school buildings that are not in use during summer recess months are a spending priority when children go without up-to-date learning materials essential for today’s technologically advanced students.

Education is no longer about teaching students to become leaders it focuses on supporting the economy, creating profits, the bottom line.

Our children deserve more from us than that. They deserve to be more than the dollar sign that makes America the world’s economic leader. They deserve to be the leaders of a world that values humanity over money.

When we fight for the right of every child in America to receive a developmentally appropriate, Arts based, experiential education that concentrates on discovering, developing, and directing their gifts and talents towards becoming knowledgeable, actively engaged citizens, education will be about learning and we will all earn the rewards.
