The Blinders Must Come Off

“The “achievement gap” in education refers to the disparity in academic performance between groups of students. The achievement gap shows up in grades, standardized-test scores, course selection, dropout rates, and college-completion rates, among other success measures. It is most often used to describe the troubling performance gaps between African-American and Hispanic students, at the lower end of the performance scale, and their non-Hispanic white peers, and the similar academic disparity between students from low-income families and those who are better off. In the past decade, though, scholars and policymakers have begun to focus increasing attention on other achievement gaps, such as those based on sex, English-language proficiency and learning disabilities.” Education Week

These measures of achievement are based on the unconstitutional collection of data outlawed by the 14th Amendment and the Civil Rights Act.

Diane Ravitch writes, “In 1988, there were 2,762 schools with one percent or less white children; by 2011, that number had ballooned to 6,727 (via Propublica).”

It is confusing that anyone in America believes that we can end racism or any other “ism” in this country without changing our current system of education for every child.

How can we, as a nation, continue to force our children into a system that “normalizes” and dehumanizes them and then expects them to be normal humans when the become adults?

This country spends billions of education dollars maintaining a white male supremacist idealism by forcing every other group, including white women, to conform to a mold into which they cannot possibly fit. “The bar of achievement!”

Every child in America should be respected for the gifts and talents they bring to the table upon their birth. Every child in America should receive an excellent education regardless of their race, creed, color, or financial status.

When we remove the blinders from our eyes we will realize that this nation will never achieve the freedom and equality it boasts until we educate our children to believe that “all men are created equal, with certain inalienable rights, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

Oh say can we see!
