Role Models For Freedom

Achievement gap – The differences in average test performance among student subgroups, usually defined in terms of ethnicity or income . . . They demonstrate persistent inequality of educational outcomes and economic opportunities between different members of our society

“We have a younger generation that sees these issues and wants to be able to correct them,” says Colin Kaepernick. “I think that’s amazing. I think it shows the strength, the character and the courage of our youth. Ultimately, they’re going to be needed to help make this change.”

It is not often that sports figures are seen as positive role models for today’s youth. It is unfortunate that his actions have been seen by some as “anti-American” when in reality it is the most American thing a sports figure has done since the protest of Tommie Smith and John Carlos during the 1968 Olympics.

“The pair both wore black socks and no shoes and Smith wore a black scarf around his neck. They were demonstrating against continuing racial discrimination of black people in the United States.” (BBC)

It is the right and responsibility of every American to stand against the government when it does not protect the rights of every American.

What is unfortunate is that nearly fifty years after Smith and Carlos made their protest of racial violence in America, Colin Kaepernick is again protesting racial injustice in America.

In nearly fifty years education has not ended racial inequities in America but has supported them.

“Dr. Walter S. Gilliam told the Washington Post that the findings show that teachers expect problems from black children — and that racial biases are deeply rooted.”

When educational success is measured by making every other group of students inferior to one particular group, we perpetuate racial stereotyping and cultural hatred.

When our system of education in America begins to recognize the gifts and talents of all children by providing them with a developmentally appropriate, Arts based, experiential education, delivered by knowledgeable, dedicated, unbiased teachers, we will begin to see the end of racial in-equality and the beginning of a truly free America.
