Recently, Alliance for a Quality Education published this report, “Ed Walkers Demand Leadership from the Governor: As Parents and Community Member Walk 150 Miles to Albany to Secure Campaign for Fiscal Equity Funds, Cuomo Administration Calls Walk “Publicity Stunt”, Parents Respond” which stated,
“. . . it is unconscionable to say that students in Utica, Schenectady and Buffalo are any less deserving. The Governor and the legislature do not need a court order to do the right thing. Not providing every student in every school, regardless of race or zip code with the opportunity to succeed is a failure of leadership.”
The lack of the opportunity to succeed educationally is not the failure of leadership, it is the failure of the American public to acknowledge that we “the people” are the government and it is our responsibility to uphold our rights.
The Declaration of Independence was written to protect the freedoms and individuality of American citizens. The meaning may have been different at that time but the intent is clear and relevant today,
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.
It is the responsibility the people to demand righteousness from its leaders or abolish their leadership. The governor has to be elected by the people and the people can impeach him. The people elected Cuomo to the governorship for three terms, six years.
When we provide our children with righteous leadership, we will begin to see the educational success that comes from righteous opportunity.
