Teach Children To Be Masters Not Slaves

Learned men and women from all over the world agree that we are mis-educating our children.

“Would you choose to build a house on top of an unfinished foundation? Of course not. Why, then, do we rush students through education when they haven’t always grasped the basics? Yes, it’s complicated, but educator Sal Khan shares his plan to turn struggling students into scholars by helping them master concepts at their own pace.”

This is the lead-in to a TED Talk given by Sal Khan, Educator and social entrepreneur and founder of Khan Academy.

According to Wikipedia, ” Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organization created in 2006 by educator Salman “Sal” Khan with the aim of providing a “free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere”. The organization produces short lectures in the form of YouTube videos. In addition to micro lectures, the organization’s website features practice exercises and tools for educators. All resources are available for free to anyone around the world. The main language of the website is English, but the content is also available in other languages.”

With private institutions and colleges offering courses on-line for free why is our government spending such a vast amount of money on higher education and so little on elementary and secondary education?

Everyone is trying to figure out a better way to educate our children yet few have made a concerted effort to change the system of education that currently exists and replace it with a system that actually educates our children.

As soon as our children enter the current system of education they are no longer considered human, they are now a dollar amount. We know how much each state spends to provide an education to their students but we do not know how many of those educational dollars actually reach the student to affect student achievement.

Our current system of education concentrates on testing and evaluation not children.

We must change the system of education so that it inspires mastery in our children and must no longer allow our children to be enslaved by ignorance.
