Respect And Pride Trump Money And Power

It has been barely a week since school ended and young people all over the city are troweling the streets from something exciting to do.

These same children, most likely, are not enrolled in summer school. They probably didn’t like school when they were forced to attend during the regular school year.

These children must attend their neighborhood school and cannot join afterschool events in order to be home to “take care” of each other while their parents work.

Their parents can’t afford day care but must work to scarcely survive homelessness.

The parents of these children are involved in the stresses of their life and find that taking time to protest things that have never changed to be a waste of time they do not have.

These parents do not get excited when a new education advocate group steps up to help. They know that group will soon step down, exhausted from the never ending battle for educational justice.

These parents may have narrowly escaped the “school to prison” pipeline but were caught up in the service industry shuffle instead, being paid minimum wages to take care of those more fortunate.

The hope of these families is that they will make it through this life with some modicum of self respect and pride.

Unfortunately our current society removes any sense of self respect from those who have not aspired to be wealthy. For those who have chosen not to worship things, the battle for love and righteousness, caring for others and their general welfare appears futile.

Our current system of education is being used to create a divisive line among Americans between the “haves” and the “have nots” in order to maintain the ignorance of “class” identity and the profits of the “hedgehogs”.

How can we, as human beings, look at a parent’s socioeconomic condition to determine a child’s educational future?

Every child in America deserves an education that discovers, develops, and directs their individual gifts and talents so they can be proud of who they are and not what they own.
