Whose Code – Whose Conduct

A code of conduct is a set of rules outlining the social norms and rules and responsibilities of, or proper practices for, an individual, party or organization. Related concepts include ethical, honor, moral codes and religious laws. (Wikipedia)

Code of conduct and restorative justice are concepts that have entered the system of education due to the overwhelming majority of “Black” students that are arrested and incarcerated for an infraction committed at school.

Inner city students enter public school in kindergarten and are given the impression that they can do or say whatever they want.

From pre-kindergarten to third grade children learn that whatever behavior is exhibited, it is tolerable and met with very little consequence to them. In fact, their abhorrent behavior at the elementary level is sometimes seen by the student as a reward, being taken out of class, given special attention, being given time out or being sent to ISS where you are not responsible for the completion of school work.

After third grade abhorrent behavior is no longer tolerated and now the student, who has been allowed to act disrespectfully without relevant consequence for four years, must suddenly change their behavior and begin to learn.

Our role, as adults, is to provide an exemplary role model of respect, love, and righteousness for our children. Instead we bombard our children with examples of adults who are mean, hate-filled, evil, liars in positions of power over the kind, loving, righteous individuals in their experience.

Our children are bullies because we, as adults, are bullies.

When we, as adults, begin to show respect for one another and show respect for our children, we will no longer need to instill practices of restorative justice based on a code of conduct.

When we provide every child in America with a developmentally appropriate, Arts based, experiential education that is concentrated on discovering, developing, and directing their individual gifts and talents toward becoming kind, respectful, knowledgeable, actively engaged citizens, their code of conduct will be instilled intrinsically and justice will be restored for and enjoyed by everyone.
