Julie Philipp, Senior Engagement Editor for the Democrat & Chronicle Media Group sent this note to those who participated in the Unite Rochester Challenge: “Thank you for participating in the Unite Rochester Challenge. We received nearly 100 entries . . .

This Sunday, we will be unveiling all of them at democratandchronicle.com and in the Democrat and Chronicle. At the same time, we are opening our online poll so readers can vote for their favorite ideas. . .

On Jan. 28 we will announce our 10 finalists. We will make the announcement at RIT’s Expressions of King’s Legacy celebration luncheon, as well as on our web site.”

Monday, January 18, 2016 is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a federal holiday.

Across the country there will be ceremonies and tributes, luncheons, dinners, speeches and awards. Adults and children will receive certificates and plaques honoring the work they accomplished in the name of Martin Luther King, Jr.

There will be televised broadcasts to watch and local ceremonies to attend.

On Tuesday, January 19, 2016, things will have returned to normal. Work and school will resume, television stations will return to their regularly scheduled shows, and we will forget, until next year, what Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Huey P. Newton, Ghandi, Mother Teresa, Mohammed, Jesus, and God have been requesting from the beginning of time, that we simply love one another.

All who know and understand that the power of humanity rests in the love we have and share with others are quickly forgotten in the hustle of trying to “make ends meet”. This is the way of the “hedgehog”.

Finding peace and love for others must continue beyond those specific days we are told to love.

Our children deserve a loving world in which to grow and become successful.

An excellent education is the only way to make King’s dream a reality.
