“Thanks to educators’ unprecedented, year-long advocacy on behalf of their students, the era of No Child Left Behind is finally ending. President Obama signed the Every Student Succeeds Act into law on Thursday, the day after the Senate overwhelming passed the bill by a vote of 85-12. ESSA furthers all three of NEA’s core goals:
Creating an opportunity “dashboard” to help ensure equity and opportunity for all students
Reducing the amount of standardized testing and decoupling test scores and high-stakes decision making
Ensuring that educators’ voices are part of decision-making at the federal, state, and local levels
“This new law is a well-deserved victory for our nation because the Every Student Succeeds Act will create greater opportunity for every student regardless of ZIP Code,” said NEA President Lily Eskelsen García.” This is the report made by the National Education Association.
The report begins with the message that it is unprecedented for educators to advocate on behalf of their students.
The opportunity for every child to succeed educationally already exists. America is able to provide every child with a free and public excellent education.
By eliminating standardized testing and returning to teacher created tests that align with the standards decisions as to whether a teacher is proficient can be made locally by parents and administrators.
Educators’ voices have always been a part of decision-making at all levels. Unfortunately the educators who are working for the corporations making the decisions have generally not been successful in the classroom.
The law is neither new nor well deserved. It is simply more rhetoric.
Until the language of education is changed, education in America will not change.
Until the bar of achievement is eliminated, the result of education in America will not change.
Until every child in America is provided with a developmentally appropriate, Arts based, experiential education that concentrates on discovering, developing, and directing their individual gifts and talents towards becoming a knowledgeable, actively engaged citizen our current system of education will continue to miseducate every child in America.
Education is a human right that supersedes federal law.
