While the federal government is back-peddling trying to save a law that violates the Constitution, no mention is made of how to effectively and efficiently make public education a human right not a State right. This should be our first concern.
“Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” is a well-known phrase in the United States Declaration of Independence. The phrase gives three examples of the “unalienable rights” which the Declaration says has been given to all human beings by their Creator, and for which governments are created to protect.” (Wikipedia)
Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness cannot be successfully achieved without first receiving an excellent education.
To be independent one must be educated to be able to make life changing decisions that require critical thinking skills. This is what we should be preparing our for, not colleges and corporations, not the workforce.
The “new” reauthorization does not change the fact that our current process of education is discriminatory, segregationist, and dehumanizing. It does not address student achievement but concentrates on standardization and evaluation.
The language of education must be changed. The “achievement” bar must be eliminated.
We, the people, must demand that our government provide every child in America with a free and public, developmentally appropriate, Arts based, experiential education that concentrates on discovering, developing, and directing their individual gifts and talents towards becoming knowledgeable, actively engaged citizens.
