American Apartheid

Apartheid: Policy of racial segregation and political and economic discrimination against non-European groups.

The Huffington Post reports, “The nation’s most segregated schools aren’t in the deep south — they’re in New York, according to a report released Tuesday by the University of California, Los Angeles’ Civil Rights Project.”

Last night at the Flying Squirrel, a community meeting place, before approximately thirty people, Yusef Shakur spoke of the racial inequities that exist across the country. He spoke of the effects of “white” privilege and “black” complacency. He spoke of the necessity to see and understand that as Americans we must work together to eradicate the injustices that plague our current system of government control of the people.

Both Yusef Shakur and Tim Wise are dedicated social advocates, raising the consciousness of the public to effect change.

Both have been to jail, both have written books on the subject of institutional racism, both tour the country speaking out, both have been doing so for many years.

Tim Wise will speak before a packed college auditorium and most likely will have been paid a stipend and travel expenses to do so while at the end of the Shakur conversation the hat was passed.

Many reason can be cited for the disparity between the paths both social advocates walk and the public, at every level must be informed, however, the glaring reality is that apartheid exists in America and is perpetuated in the language of our current system of education.

Our children are being educated to believe that being a certain color makes you better than others. Our children are being educated to believe that having more money than someone else makes you better than they. Our children are being educated to believe that how you make money is more important than who you choose to be as a human being.

The only way to end apartheid in America is to change our current system of education so that it concentrates on discovering, developing, and directing the gifts and talents of ALL children towards becoming knowledgeable, involved citizens.

A Living Truth

As February approaches educators across the country will prepare to teach their students about “Black” history.

Multitudes of copies of Martin Luther King cartoon images will be distributed to elementary school children to be colored in whatever fashion and color the child chooses in order to support their individuality.

Around the country school children will learn, with the exception of Barack Obama, “Black” leaders are brave old women, Rosa Parks, and dead men, Martin Luther King, and that Blacks in America, because of Ms. Parks and Dr. King, are now free. Ask any elementary school child, black or white who Martin Luther King is or was, and you may very well hear that he freed the slaves.

In his essay, “Fifty years since the Rochester, New York riots” Jonathan White writes, “Thanks to the efforts of such organizations, (FIGHT) Ronald Good was elected as the first black city council member in 1966, and in 1967 Ruth Scott became the first black female city council member. Rochester would go on to elect its first black mayor in 1993, Democrat William Johnson, who won 72 percent of the vote and acted as mayor of Rochester until 2005. Rochester’s current Mayor, Democrat Lovely Warren, is an African American woman, as is the current CEO of Xerox, Ursula Burns.”

Elementary school children, Black or White, will likely never hear about these local leaders. Living Black leaders will not be asked to visit classrooms and speak to these young children and engage their interest in becoming future leaders of our city, state, or country.

The institutional racism that Tim Wise and others speak of is so deeply entrenched in our current system of education that it not only supports white supremacy but enforces it on a national scale through its Federal control of the system.

When we recognize that our current system of education is harming ALL children we can begin to concentrate on changing education so that it serves the purpose for which it was intended, to create a strong, intelligent nation of individuals who take an active interest in their government.

Privileged In America

On February 10th, Monroe Community College will present Tim Wise, author of “White Like Me”, which is, as the back cover of the book states, “A personal examination of the way in which racial privilege shapes the daily lives of white America and in every realm; employment, education, housing, criminal justice , and elsewhere.”

Wise exposes to “white” people what “black” people have always known, that our American society is racist. Wise proffers that the attitude of supremacy is just as destructive to “whites” as it has been for “blacks”.

Education for “blacks” in America is not an issue of testing, data mining, teacher evaluation, or union busting. For “blacks” in America the decades long failure to properly educate “blacks” and provide for them the same education that affluent “whites’ receive has been overlooked to such an extent that the same damaging system of education that has failed poor, urban, “blacks” is now showing its presence in the system designed for “white” America.

“White” America does not hesitate to point out that our current system of education is not failing every child so it must not be all bad. However, the fact that Tim Wise is a popular anti-racist speaker and is exposing, in 2015, “white” supremacist’s attitudes in “employment, education, housing, criminal justice , and elsewhere” speaks volumes to the necessity for changing our current system of education and the language of the Federal, State, and Local government concerning education.

Our current system of education is failing every child in America when “white” Americans do not recognize that the disparities that exist between the citizens of this Nation are caused by the elitists that economically enslave all of us to profit from our lack of unity.

When we change our current system of education so that it focuses on providing EVERY child in America with a free and public education that concentrates on discovering, developing, and directing their gifts and talents toward becoming a knowledgeable and engaged citizen of these United States, we will see an end to the “white” supremacist control of our country.

The Blessings Of Liberty

Posterity: All future generations

The Preamble to the Constitution:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

In order to secure the blessings of liberty to our posterity, we must first insure that our posterity are knowledgeable, capable, and willing to carry on the legacy ofthe Constitution of our United States.

Regardless of their intent, the Constitution refers to all Americans, not just wealthy, white, landowners.

Because the intent has changed, the language of the Constitution must also change.

It was never intended that the Federal government tell States how to conduct business unless Constitutional rights are denied. Those rights were intended to be general guidelines of decency and humanity.

Article 1:
Section. 1.
All legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and House of Representatives.
Section. 2.
The House of Representatives shall be composed of Members chosen every second Year by the People of the several States, and the Electors in each State shall have the Qualifications requisite for Electors of the most numerous Branch of the State Legislature.
Section. 3.
The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, chosen by the Legislature thereof, for six Years; and each Senator shall have one Vote.

Gillibrand, Kirsten E. (D) and Charles E. (D) are our Senate representatives with NYS having twenty-seven Houserepresentatives.

Assembly members, those who are closest to representing the voice of the people, have no term limits. New York has 150 Assembly members who can only be voted out of office.

Our children deserve our voice in voting for Assembly members who believe in the gifts and talents of our children and are willing to carry that message to our Federal legislative leaders.

Gifts and Talents

History teaches us that when a civilization’s environment provides the resources necessary to meet their basic needs, the focus of their energy and attention turns to creating a belief system that displays gratitude for the blessings they received and respect for the supplier of those blessings.

In showing their gratitude and respect for the nature or god that provided their sustenance, the natural gifts and talents of the indigenous people were discovered and developed to create a unity of purpose among the people by celebrating their good fortune in the form of art, music, and dance. They recorded their difficult journey to their final destination through verbal stories told to each new generation and then in writing when it became popularized.

Once the stressors of survival were met, people began to develop their culture.

The stressors of meeting our basic needs, food, clothing, and shelter, have nearly been eliminated for most people living in America.

Social service agencies provide food, clothing, and shelter for citizens. Schools provide food, and clothing to children. Not for profit and Non-profit agencies provide food, clothing, and shelter for individuals who don’t qualify for social services.

With the stressors of life removed, our society, according to history, should be concentrating on showing gratitude and respect for the nature or god that provided our sustenance by discovering, developing, and directing the gifts and talents of our children towards becoming knowledgeable, actively engaged citizens.

We must teach our children to be grateful for the blessings they receive by living in America and to show their gratitude for those blessings by respecting the world in which we live and the many cultures who have survived the hazards of this world to create a culture of gratitude and respect among their people.

Our children deserve to display their gifts and talents in gratitude and respect for living in a country that provides the resources that meet their basic needs.

Our children will be grateful and show respect for their environment, when adults show them that we are grateful for and respect them.

The High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09) is a nationally representative, longitudinal study of more than 20,000 9th graders in 944 schools in 2009 who are being followed through their secondary and postsecondary years. The study focuses on understanding students’ trajectories from the beginning of high school into postsecondary education or the workforce and beyond. The field test will inform the survey and data collection procedures . . .

More testing to determine data collection procedures. How does this equate to student success especially when the failure in education begins at the primary level where children disconnect from our current system of education as early as Second Grade.

National Board for Education Sciences; Open Meeting
The National Board for Education Sciences advises the Director of the Institute of Education Sciences on, the establishment of activities to be supported by the Institute . . .

Will those activities be hands-on and experiential for all children or will testing and data collection be the means by which they assess student achievement?

President’s Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities
The purpose of the Board is to advise the President and the Secretary of Education on all matters pertaining to strengthening the educational capacity of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Submission of Data by State Educational Agencies; Submission Dates for State Revenue and Expenditure Reports for Fiscal Year (FY) 2014, Revisions to Those Reports, and Revisions to Prior Fiscal Year Reports
The report from SEAs includes attendance, revenue, and expenditure data from which NCES determines a State’s “average per-pupil expenditure” The Secretary uses these data directly in calculating allocations for certain formula grant programs, including, but not limited to, title I, part A of the ESEA, Impact Aid, and Indian Education programs.

Student success is not the mission of the Federal Department of Education, how and where federal tax dollars are spent is their concern.

The Message Was Clear

In President Obama’s “State of the Nation” speech, the only mention of education was to provide free community college to the Associate’s Degree level.

President Obama is and was not an education president. His platform was health. He knew little about education and, in assessing his decision to retain Arne Duncan as Education Secretary, few on his staff knew much about education.

It is incumbent upon citizens to make sure the leaders they elect are knowledgeable on all issues or have someone on their staff able to effectively and efficiently inform them of the public concerns and opinions regarding that issue.

It is our obligation to attend meetings and ask questions and demand accountable action especially when it comes to our children’s educational future.

As Congress comes together to discuss issues in education, groups who have working education committees can have representatives at those meetings or have someone watching them and commenting through social media. Technology has made it possible to raise our voice without leaving our homes. Advocating for Constitutionally guaranteeing the excellent education of every child will generate the educational change that will lead to the success of America.

Through social media we now realize and understand that our current system of education is not failing everywhere. It is failing in large urban areas where high concentrations of poverty exist and their is a cultural disparity between the perceived social norm, “middle class” and those who are seen as “lower class”.

President Obama clearly pointed out the difference between the “middle class” attitude towards hard work, perseverance, and success, and that of the “lower class” who aren’t willing to work hard enough to achieve success.

Because he is and was not an “education” president, President Obama did not make the connection between education and attitude.

“Middle class” children receive a better education therefore they have a better attitude.

We must elect leaders who know and understand the importance of education to the success of America.

Every citizen must fight for the right of all children to receive an excellent education.
