Tuesday, November 4, 2014 is election day. Because this is a midterm election, voter turnout is expected to be approximately 20% lower than in a major election.
On October 27, 2014 it was reported by the Poughkeepsie Journal, “With one week to go until Election Day, the New York State United Teachers union launched a $200,000 television advertisement campaign to urge voters to support the bond act. The State Democratic Committee, which is controlled by Cuomo, also launched a pro-bond mail campaign.
On October 30, 2014 Joseph Spector, of the Democrat & Chronicle reports, “The New York State United Teachers union offered praise to Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino in an “open letter” last night and offered scorn to Cuomo, who has warred with public unions since taking office in 2011.”
Vacillating between issues and candidates days before an election, because they are not “saying” the right thing, is not asking union members to vote responsibly.
Neither NYSUT nor any other union should be publicly supporting policy or candidates but should allow its members the right and responsibility to contemplate the issues, become knowledgeable about the position of the candidates on those issues, and then vote according to their conscience and their voice.
As Americans we have become complacent about raising our voice and have allowed corporate influence to determine the direction of our children’s education.
Politicians are counting on low voter turnout in order to continue their reign of educational control and failure for four more years.
Our children deserve our individual voice speaking to the failure of our current system of education to provide an excellent education to ALL of America’s children.
Our children deserve to have the adults, charged with controlling the direction of our government through their voting voice, speak up and speak out for their educational future and their future as caring, responsible, respectful adults who are proud of the gifts and talents they bring to make this world a better place in which to live.
Providing an excellent education to all children will make America the strong, independent country it was intended to be.
