Working With Faith – Acting Without Control

“When you control a man’s thinking you do not have to worry about his actions. You do not have to tell him not to stand here or go yonder. He will find his “proper place” and will stay in it. You do not need to send him to the back door. He will go without being told. In fact, if there is no back door, he will cut one for his special benefit. His education makes it necessary.” Carter G. Woodson (1933)

“The thesis of Dr. Woodson’s book is that African Americans of his day were being culturally indoctrinated, rather than taught, in American schools. This conditioning, he claims, causes African Americans to become dependent and to seek out inferior places in the greater society of which they are a part. He challenges his readers to become autodidacts and to “do for themselves”, regardless of what they were taught:” Widipedia

On April 15 and May 1, 2014, from 6 to 9 p.m, in City Council Chambers, 30 Church St, the Mayor’s “Early Learning Council” will hear testimony from the community concerning “the challenges and opportunities inherent in educating Rochester’s youngest and most vulnerable students.” Mayor Warren convened the Early Learning Council in response to Governor Cuomo’s proposal to expand New York State’s pre-K program. Those wishing to speak must sign up by 5 p.m. the day prior to the hearing by calling 428-6856.

Saturday April 26, 2014 — 7:00 PM, the South Wedge Mission, 124 Carolina Street, invites the citizens of Rochester to, “Take part in this community event which will bring you out of your seat to act on a current situation we face in the Rochester City School District . . . Joining us are community members who have come together . . . to explore how we can, from the people up, begin to have a dialogue.”

We must no longer question our ability to change the current system of education, we must come together with the power of our voice and demand that the focus of education be directed towards discovering, developing, and directing the gifts and talents of ALL of our children ending the control of mis-education.
