Class Is In Session

Democracy: A government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections.

Classism: Unfair treatment of people because of their social or economic class

“BOULDER, CO (June 4, 2013) ā€“ According to a recent report, U.S. high schools should start taking part in yet another standardized test, as a way to spur improvements in achievement. Specifically, the report contends that participating in a new international test will benefit U.S. middle class students.”

Is there any wonder why our children are confused, depressed, and disheartened with the reality of this world. We tell them that they live in the greatest nation on earth where all men are free and equal in the eyes of the law while our entire system of education, remands them to a life of “unfair treatment because of their social or economic class.”

To accept the language of our federal, state, and local governments that delineates between the types of educational services our children receive based on social class is to accept the institutionally racist attitudes of failure that pervade our current educational structure.

As the campaign for School Board Commissioner gets underway, there are eleven candidates vying for three positions. The incumbents, have shown that they support the current system of education which has failed our children for the last five decades. Several candidates are new to the education arena and several candidates have had a vested interest and have been actively involved in changing the system of education for many years.

While it is imperative that we first address the local problems we face in educating our children, the struggle to change education so that it concentrates on discovering, developing, and directing the gifts and talents of all children is much more extensive and involved.

Those we elect to leadership positions must be knowledgeable of and able to address the issue of our failing system of education at all levels of government.

Until we are all free and equal, none of us are free or equal.
