Longer days, STEM education, standardized testing, teacher evaluation, administrator evaluation, school choice, K-8, smaller schools, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
In the earliest days of education children learned from one book. They learned how to be decent human beings, and good citizens they learned how to read, they learned how to write. From their environment they learned Math and Science. Teachers taught all grade levels in one room and children advanced as they mastered their lessons. Education wasn’t profitable it was effective.
We continue to go round and round fidgeting with the superficial aspects of education, becoming more and more enslaved to an industrial attitude that relegates the majority of our children to a life of mindless factory work and social programs. We are unable to discern the truth from the facts.
The fact is, children are profitable. Child labor is and always has been the cheapest form of labor. Children are easy to replace. However, child labor laws forced children out of the work place and into schools. Industry lost profits as adults began to unionize for better working conditions.
Business leaders recognized that if they were to once again realize their greatest profit potential, they had to go to where the children were, schools. Children need books, they need pencils and paper, and don’t forget tests. They need desks and chairs and an endless supply of non-renewables, replacing the profits lost by the removal of children from the workforce.
The truth is, our children are not the future work force, they are our future.
Our children are more than what they can produce, they are masters of creation.
Our children are not the promise of profits, they are the hope of humanity.
We cannot continue to let the facts overshadow the truth. We must use facts to support the truth that all of our children are precious and invaluable. They are not a resource to be used, they are a gift to be cherished.
