According to Wikipedia, “The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a worldwide study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in member and non-member nations of 15-year-old school pupils’ scholastic performance on mathematics, science, and reading. It was first performed in 2000 and then repeated every three years. It is done with view to improving education policies and outcomes. The data has increasingly been used both to assess the impact of education quality on incomes and growth and for understanding what causes differences in achievement across nations.”
The United States is ranked 36th out of 65 countries reporting. Number one was Shanghai, representing China.
Sean Coughlan BBC News education correspondent reports, “Mr Schleicher, who runs the Pisa tests taken every three years, says Shanghai is engaged in a systematic, long-term project to improve education, as a way of transforming its economy.”
Mr. Schleicher explains, “teachers have a higher status in China than anywhere else in the world and they are not afraid of using this influence. Teachers call up parents at least fortnightly, they ring them on their mobile to check on how their children are working. They also tell them how to improve their parenting . . . As a society you invest in education rather than consumption.”
Mr. Schleicher has a great deal more to say about the changes Shanghai has made, not only to its system of education but to its attitude toward societal success as well.
“”They’re not afraid of losing jobs in the production sector, they want to move up the value chain, they want to upgrade their talent pool,” says Mr Schleicher.”
Shanghai is investing in the gifts and talents of its children but without the freedoms a public education in the United States provides and it is succeeding. How much more will our children succeed educationally and socially given their rights to freedom and justice for all?
To refuse to recognize the inherent gifts and talents of our children is to state clearly America has no interest in a successful future as a strong, independent, self-governing nation.
