Recently there has been growing concern that the rights of parents to raise their children as they see fit is coming under attack. There are those who believe that the government is trying to subjugate the rights of parents and are lobbying for passage of the Parents Rights Amendment to the Constitution.
These individuals are not wrong in their assumption however, their timing is a bit off. Years ago children were given the right to call the police on their parents when they believed they were being abusively punished. When calling the police from home didn’t yield the desired results, children soon realized that they could get their parents in “trouble” when they were angry with them by reporting incidents of abuse to their teachers or other school officials.
When parents were called to school to correct the abhorrent behavior of their child, teachers and/or other school personnel called Child Protective Services on those parents who chose corporal punishment as their means of discipline.
Today we wonder why parents have taken a “back seat” to raising their children. Today, more children are being more heinously abused than ever before. Today, since parents have been subdued by false reports of abuse, children have turned to teachers and school personnel as the targets of their anger.
The lesson here is, you can’t have it both ways. Either everyone is protected by the Constitution or no one is. Everyone is afforded civil liberties or no one is.
When we use the law to control the actions of a certain group of people those laws will reach out and be used to control the actions of all people. Laws were not meant to control but to protect.
Currently, education law is being used to control the actions of school districts, teachers, and unions. Education law should be enacted to protect the successful education of children.
There are many groups involved in the effort to change the system of education which means amending education law. We must make sure those amendments protect children, not punish adults.
